Every garden begins with light.
Optical Garden is a photographic and moving_image project exploring the relationship between nature, light and perception through the optical properties of synthetic sapphire.
Inspired by the generative principle of photosynthesis, the project reflects on light as the invisible force that sustains both life and vision. Just as plants transform sunlight into energy, Optical Garden approaches synthetic sapphire as an optical device capable of refracting, redirecting and transforming light, becoming an active instrument in the image-making process.
The works originate from this research. Created through a combination of original photography and digital manipulation, they investigate how the refractive properties of synthetic sapphire can reshape perception and generate new visual landscapes. Rather than representing the material itself, the images explore the immaterial traces of light as it passes through it, revealing colour, reflection and transparency as living phenomena rather than fixed optical effects.
Balancing scientific observation and poetic imagination, the series dissolves the boundaries between the organic and the technological. The resulting images evoke a space where natural processes and optical technologies coexist, suggesting that innovation can emerge through a deeper understanding of the invisible dynamics of light.
Rather than creating spectacle, Optical Garden encourages a slower and more attentive way of looking. It invites viewers to experience light not simply as a physical phenomenon, but as a living medium that shapes perception and redefines our relationship with the natural world.
